La Barba Red is the OG—the initial offering from co-founders Tony Bellatto and Craig Rossi. While the bearded duo launched La Barba Cigars in 2010—with the name translating to mean The Beard—it wasn't until 2013 that the company showcased their freshman offering, dubbed La Barba Red.
Donning an attractive, vintage-inspired red band with a simplistic rendering of a straight razor, La Barba Red invokes gothic imagery not unlike Sweeney Todd. When first launched, La Barba had teamed with Christian Eiroa (of CLE Cigars) for production in Honduras. But after a brand overhaul in 2016, La Barba moved all production to the William Ventura factory in the Dominican Republic, debuting all-new packaging shortly thereafter.
One factor that has remained constant since day one is La Barba Red's small-batch craftsmanship. Inspired by Cuban-esque flavor profiles, La Barba Red boasts a highly specific blend, featuring all-Dominican tobaccos throughout. The recipe begins with a Dominican Corojo wrapper, which is carefully secured over a Dominican binder and fillers of Dominican Pelo de Oro and Criollo '98. This intricate concoction of tobaccos translates to a refined and highly flavorful smoking experience, boasting nuances of buttered nuts, leather, charred oak, cinnamon, and sweet graham crackers.
