Okay, so we know what you’re thinking, “Who forgot the wrapper on this cigar?!” Truth is, these gnarly-looking sticks have a trick up their sleeve… They’re actually quite attractive! The shaggy appearance is for function, as the finished cigars have been gently wrapped in an additional tobacco leaf for protection purposes—damn that’s clever!
The cigars are known as Leaf by Oscar, and were created as a special collaborative project by Oscar Valladares and Jim “Island Jim” Robinson at Oscar’s factory in Danlí, Honduras. Story goes, when heading out of the factory one evening, the boys reached for some “road ‘gars”; without any means to protect the cigars from the rough terrain, the cigars were haphazardly wrapped in spare tobacco leaves from the factory. Not only did they find this to be sufficient for “stogie protection,” but they found that the leaf imparted its own oils onto the rolled cigar — making for an even more delicious smoke than before!
Leaf by Oscar cigars come in four varieties: Connecticut, Sumatra, Corojo, and Maduro; each use a similar filler/binder blend of all-Honduran tobaccos, but are wrapped in unique tobacco varieties, offering a smoking experience for all flavor preferences. The cigars also make use of two bands—one for the out covering and one on the actual cigar—each being made from tobacco scraps from Valladares’ factory. In this way, Leaf by Oscar cigars follow the old adage, “Waste not, want not,” incorporating 100% tobacco through and through!
