Here it is… the granddaddy of boutique/craft cigars! Tatuaje Cigars, sometimes known as Havana Cellars, began in 2003, created by one of the most prominent figures in the modern cigar scene, Pete Johnson. Pete’s background is in the music scene of Los Angeles, carrying over his heavily tattooed sleeves into his post-band-era passion—premium cigars. This is the meaning behind Tatuaje, which is Spanish for “tattoo.”
In 2003, Pete teamed with Don Pepín García to introduce the first Tatuaje cigars. Pepín was hailed as one of the best torcedores in all of Cuba, and Tatuaje became Pepín’s first successful brand after emigrating to America shortly before. Pete Johnson and the García family have remained partners ever since, operating as two of the biggest craft cigar brands in the world to this day (Tatuaje and My Father Cigars).
Tatuaje cigars are famous for their old-world Cuban profiles with amped-up smoking experiences. The cigars feature simplistic banding and packaging that is made to mimic traditional Cuban styles. All Tatuaje cigars are triple capped and include two binders—both are signatures of Master Blender Don Pepín García. Tatuaje is also known for crafting some of the most sought-after, rare and limited edition releases, such as the coveted Monster Series.
Tatuaje manages to perfectly teeter between one of today’s most popular cigars, while maintaining an air of limited and boutique craftsmanship. There really is no “wrong choice” when selecting a Tatuaje cigar.
