Royal Agio Cigars, based in Duizel, Netherlands, is best known for producing premium small-sized cigars and cigarillos such as Mohair’s and Panter. But the company also includes the more luxurious Balmoral name, a brand that dates back to 1895.
In 2014, Balmoral caught the attention of craft enthusiasts for a rare blend known as Balmoral Royal Selection Añejo 18, a special blend that boasted an 18-year-aged Brazilian ‘Sungrown’ Arapiraca wrapper. The cigar was so successful that Balmoral faced the problem of sustainability, with the Añejo 18's wrapper inventories only able to withstand very limited production.
Balmoral found the solution and, partnering with industry juggernaut Drew Estate for distribution, introduced the Balmoral Añejo XO in 2015. For this special project, the company has utilized a similar blend of vintage tobaccos from the original Añejo 18 (including Brazilian, Nicaragua, and Dominican leaves in the filler and a Dominican Olor binder), only swapping the cigar's wrapper for a new selection of Brazilian Sun Grown leaf. With a strict sorting/selection process in the company's factory in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, paired with careful aging, Balmoral Añejo XO offers a sophisticated and complex smoking experience for the ardent enthusiast.
Expect a medium-plus body and rich character of cocoa, oak wood, pepper spice, and a long and sweet cream-filled finish.
